What to Wear to a Session

I Wear My Sunglasses at Night

While wearing sunglasses at night may be acceptable, wearing them during a photoshoot may not be. The clothing you choose to wear for a photoshoot will have a lasting effect on the photos that you receive. You will keep these pictures forever, so making a conscious decision about what to wear is important.  Here are some tips, or ideas, for what to wear for a photoshoot.

  • Wear what you are comfortable in.

You want to be calm and relaxed while taking pictures, so pick out an outfit that you know looks good and is also comfortable. This will help you to be more natural and candid during your session.

  • Coordinate outfits, but don’t match.

This goes for all kinds of pictures. Coordinate complementary colors including warm tones of red, green, and yellow or cool tones of blue, pink, purple. Avoid mixing tones as this may be very distracting in photos. It is also encouraged to stay away from neon colors which can be distracting and sometimes reflective.

  • You can never go wrong with a classic look.

Outfits consisting of chinos, khakis, beige and blues, nature-hues, pastels, shirts, and simple dresses. These choices are bound to keep your portraits looking timeless and classy if that is what you are looking for.

  • Avoid any small repeating patterns.

Sometimes cameras will pick up on your pattern and make it look 3D. Especially on a computer or phone screen. This can be avoided by not wearing them. If you’re not sure how your pattern will show up on camera, feel free to email me. (Click HERE to send me an email!)

  • Feel free to bring a change in outfits!

I allow two to three outfits in a session, so if you’re not sure what outfit will look best in photos then bring both! This way you will have a variety of looks for your photos.
